Waukee Aquatics is a natatorium for a high school where the swimming and diving teams can compete. It provides ample space for spectating, locker rooms for the athletes, and all the mechanical and plumbing spaces necessary to maintain the pools.
PEC designed and detailed this project in addition to our efforts to design assist and coordinate with all the different MEP trades.
This structure presented some challenging cases in design and panel handling. Some of the lateral system included moment frames constructed out of precast components. PEC had to develop unique and accessible connection solutions for these cases, while maintaining a clean finish appearance. A number of the panels on this project were rather tall and slender, which can be a challenge unto itself. Given some of the significant penetrations required for HVAC and plumbing, along with openings to mechanical spaces, many of the panels were highly complicated studies in panel handling.
