This structure is a new cheese plant for Hilmar Cheese located in Dodge City, Kansas. PEC provided design, detailing and project management for the project that included the roof structure of multiple separate areas of the overall structure, and the precast design of a multi-level total precast tower. All areas of the project required a Grade A food grade finish.
The main roof structures required coordination for bearing and connections with tilt-walls. The tower had many challenges including mitered beam framing, large circular openings, heavy equipment framing and extensive MEP coordination.
The overall size of the precast structures is very large. The food grade requirements present detailing challenges. The Area K slab and beam geometry required for the large openings and equipment loads is impressive.
PEC had to navigate a complicated scope structure for Area K that included the EOR specifying the loads, a third party running the lateral analysis and topping design and PEC doing the precast member and connection designs.
